Watch the GMC Hummer EV Come to Life
A fascinating video takes enthusiasts inside GM’s Factory Zero assembly plant, where the new GMC Hummer EV pickup truck and SUV models are coming to life. It’s incredible to see how these massive electric vehicles go from what the heck to holy watts of freedom, and the attention to detail that goes into every pickup and SUV is astonishing. General Motors has put a lot of thought and effort into making these vehicles powerful, efficient but also safe and reliable. We highly recommend checking out this video for car fans or naysayers that need convincing on how the EVs are assembled.
What used to be the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant is now called Factory Zero, and it’s one of the Big Red’s essential EV production facilities in the United States. It’s a unique site with a rich history dating back to the first Dodge facility in the Motor City. Since General Motors took ownership in 1985, the automaker has cultivated over four million vehicles there.
The Factory Zero plant recently went offline for upgrades in preparation for the GMC Silverado EV and Sierra EV. We were fortunate enough to get a peek inside the plant while the workers constructed some Hummer EVs, and it was fascinating to watch the process. The factory is full of six-axis robots that work together seamlessly, handling everything from spot welding to paint application. It’s a mesmerizing sight to see. While robots tackle most of the work, humans still inspect and install various components.
The incomplete Hummers are moved around the plant using large conveyors and autonomous vehicles, which is impressive given the size of the cars. It’s also interesting to see employees interact with the Hummer’s massive 212-kWh battery, whether filling it or transporting it around the factory floor.
It’s fascinating to witness the diligent workers of GM put the battery into the Hummer EV’s chassis. In the video, assembly workers lift the body-in-white up with a two-post lift and conveyor system before aligning the battery with the chassis. The workers then lower the lift onto the battery pack, which looks hefty judging by the size of the hydraulic hardware involved. After that, the conveyor system continues, and the drive units are lifted and bolted into place.
After the general construction work on a Hummer EV finishes, the vehicle heads to GM’s testing facility for final checks. The last round of inspections includes a quality control check and crucial dyno calibration tests. Although the build process is lengthy, it is necessary for a vehicle as impressive as the Hummer EV. However, General Motors dealt with its fair share of difficulties getting these fantastic cars to its customers, with only two units sold in the year’s first quarter (2023). GM’s tribulations were primarily due to the facility’s preparation for additional nameplates, and production numbers may rise throughout 2023 to accommodate the 90,000 Hummer EV and Hummer EV SUV reservations.
