A Look Back at the GMC Typhoon
Once upon a time, there was a GMC Typhoon. The GMC’s sporty SUV was a game-changer when introduced, and it still turns heads today. The automotive General shook things up by merging the terms “sport” and “truck” to create this unique vehicle. The demand for performance vehicles from the 1980s has been rising lately, and the Typhoon is no exception. Here are a few things to know about this iconic vehicle.
Pricing of the Past
The GMC Typhoon was priced at $29,530 in 1992. However, as time has passed, these pickups have become quite limited and expensive. In fact, the GMC SUV is considered a rare find, and their value is expected to increase even further, especially when kept in their original condition. While some may view this as positive news, there may be better options for enthusiasts searching for a fun and sporty car to drive daily.
How Many Typhoons Did GMC Produce?
There were 2,497 GMC Typhoons made in 1992 and 2,200 made in 1993, for 4,697. Admittedly, that’s not a significant number compared to other vehicles, but it’s still a sought-after model for collectors.
What Refinements Did the GMC Typhoon Receive?
The Typhoon had a self-leveling rear suspension, similar to vintage Mercedes-Benzes. The system would inflate air bladders to counter rear-end sag when the SUV had heavy luggage inside.
Also, there were a variety of paint colors available for the Typhoon. Some were forest green metallic, radar blue, raspberry metallic, frost white, royal blue metallic, aspen blue, bright teal, apple red, garnet red, and black.
The lower-compression pistons helped to improve the overall performance, as did the unique intake and exhaust manifolds. But the true star of the show is the sweet multi-point fuel injection system, which helped maximize the engine’s power. Additionally, the throttle body with a larger twin-bore version from the Corvette’s 5.7-liter V-8 installed a Mitsubishi TD06-17C turbocharger with a Garrett water-to-air intercooler. All of these modifications have transformed the driving experience.
The Typhoon is a Speed Demon
It’s interesting to note that until recently, most performance SUVs in the market were confined to 1990s technology. It’s amazing to think that the top speed needed to be limited due to the incredible acceleration of these cars. One example is the Typhoon, which offered a top speed of 124 mph.
The GMC Typhoon Offered Luxury?
The GMC Typhoon offered brilliant comfort and luxury features for its time. The leather seats are incredibly comfortable, and the steering wheel is massive, which matches the vehicle’s power. Our favorite feature is the gauge cluster, taken from the Pontiac Sunbird, adding a nice touch of luxury. The self-leveling air suspension is another excellent addition, making every ride enjoyable and smooth.
An Insightful Warning Sticker
The GMC Typhoon was the only truck in the 1990s with a warning sticker. The sticker read, “Off-road operation could result in severe damage to chassis and drivetrain.” This cautionary label likely prevented many road accidents. Interestingly, the GMC Typhoon had one of the lowest accident rates during that decade.
General Motors had some exciting car projects in the late 80s, but one, in particular, was quite memorable: the GMC Typhoon SUV. The Typhoon was a true masterpiece that many people purchased in the 90s, and even though the vehicles are no longer assembled, people still buy old versions. It’s incredible that this one truck significantly impacted how future trucks would look and function and even influenced the creation of many modern truck prototypes.
