The US to Recieve its First Buick EV

The first Buick EV will officially be known as the Electra. Additionally, the 2025 Buick Electra will premiere in the US in 2024. A spokesperson for the automaker confirmed the electric SUV is in the works. However, there remains some uncertainty on what variation of the Electra is approaching the US. In November (2022), Buick filed a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for Electra 1 through 9. Furthermore, a high-performance Electra GS is also in the works.

Enthusiasts narrowed some possible name choices down to the Buick Electra E5, which makes sense since the SUV premiered in China. The Electra E5 came to life in China as part of a collaboration involving SAIC-GM. The 50/50 partnership is between General Motors and SAIC Motor Corporation. The Motor Corporation is a state-owned car manufacturer that outputs over 5 million vehicles annually. General Motors collaborated with SAIC to assemble Chevrolets, Buicks, and Cadillacs in China. The collaboration makes a lot of sense, considering China is the largest car market in the world.

The Buick Electra E5 is symbolic of the automaker in more ways than one. For starters, the EV is the first to feature the new logo. Additionally, the Electra is the first to sport the automaker’s Ultium-based platform. Most importantly, the future EV is the first to reveal Buick’s new creative direction, and the idea was initially exposed through the 2022 Electra concept. Photos of the Electra-X’s concept came to light earlier this year (2022).

The future Buick EV will share the same platform as its corporate brethren, the approaching 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV. Unfortunately, the automaker has yet to reveal the Electra’s powertrain or cabin, but since the Chevrolet Equinox is relatively similar, we have little room for speculation.

The Chevrolet Equinox will become available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The standard Chevrolet Equinox will feature front-wheel drive and propel through a single motor yielding 210 horsepower and 242 lb-ft of torque. The all-wheel-drive system will add a second motor to the rear axle to produce 290 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. Furthermore, the Chevrolet Equinox will feature two battery options, and the long-range battery will deliver 300 miles for front-wheel drive.
