The 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X Attains a New Engine
The 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X welcomes an enhanced engine for the new model. Once upon a time, the pickup only featured the automaker’s 6.2-liter V8 engine. However, times have changed, and the AT4X trim will offer a Duramax diesel engine as the standard. The new motor is a strategic move from General Motors, calling to enthusiasts who love to feel the torque under their feet.
For the 2023 model year, the Sierra enhanced the 3.0-liter Duramax engine to deliver 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. A ten percent boost compared to the 2022 model. The enhanced output originates from the new steel pistons, injectors, and a modified turbo compressor wheel. In addition, the Big Red found it necessary to enhance the Sierra’s temperature control features to maintain the Duramax’s healthy rhythm.
Paired with the Duramax diesel is a 10-speed automatic, which parallels the accompaniment of the V8. Thanks to the engine’s powerful torque, the AT4X is a perfect choice concerning towing. Since 95 percent of peak torque available is just 1,250 rpm, there’s plenty of growl at the low end to push through those difficult off-road situations. However, a bonus is that the diesel’s superior fuel economy will garner more attention to the Sierra AT4X and makes it ideal for overlanding.
“The 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine has long been a favorite of Sierra light-duty owners. -Will Mellon, Marketing Manager for the GMC Sierra
Over 20 percent of Sierra 1500 models equipped with the Duramax engine have delighted enthusiasts. Mellon believes that sales will continue to climb with the assistance of the AT4X trim. Furthermore, the V8 engine will remain available only if fans prefer the optional over the standard.
The Sierra AT4X shifting toward the Diesel direction is unexpected. However, GM’s cousin, Chevrolet, recently equipped the Silverado ZR2 with the same engine. The off-road variant will offer the Duramax as standard and the 6.2-liter gas V8 engine as an option.
The engine refinement is another upgrade in the gang of enhancements due for the Sierra 1500 lineup. The GMC pickup’s Denali, Denali Ultimate, AT4, and AT4X trims will acquire new features. In addition, the legendary pickup will attain the latest optional power-retractable steps, plus an active exhaust option that will also become available for the SLT. There are two new wheel designs coming to the Sierra. Most importantly, GMC unveiled two new “unique and bold” exterior colors: Downpour Metallic and Thunderstorm Gray.
