Farewell, Push-Button Shifter! The 2025 GMC Terrain Shifts into New Gear Style
The 2025 GMC Terrain is making waves with some exciting changes, starting with the demise of its push-button shifter in favor of a traditional column-mounted gear lever. Gear shifts are now smoother and more straightforward in this refreshed compact SUV. The third-gen Terrain brings back the boxy, truck-like silhouette reminiscent of the original model, with GMC drawing design inspiration from its more extensive, rugged trucks.
The Terrain’s dashboard now centers around a massive 15.0-inch vertically oriented touchscreen with a built-in Google, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot. An 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster offers customizable settings for a more tech-savvy driving experience. For 2025, GMC has also retired the SLE and SLT trims, with the Elevation now serving as the entry model with heated seats, a heated steering wheel, remote start, and adaptive cruise control.
The Terrain steps up its driver-assistance game with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automated braking when turning at intersections, and steering assist for blind spots. The GMC SUV also has a rearview camera mirror and an upgraded surround-view system featuring up to eight angles.
As the rugged AT4 and top-tier Denali trims roll in for 2026, the 2025 Elevation will launch with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, pushing out 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. AWD models get a new eight-speed automatic transmission and a towing capacity of 1500 lbs. Meanwhile, FWD versions have a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and can tow up to 800 lbs.
With a slightly wider and taller body than its predecessor, the new Terrain offers more space for rear passengers while maintaining its 30-cubic-foot cargo capacity. For off-road adventurers, the AT4 trim has all-terrain tires, a front skid plate, and a lifted suspension for conquering rough terrain. At the same time, the Denali flaunts luxury with larger wheels, premium dampers, and glitzy design elements.
Pricing is still under wraps, but the 2025 AWD Elevation may start around $35,000, while the AT4 and Denali trims may reach the $40,000 mark in 2026.
