Buick Sits Well Above the Rest in New JD Power Study

The latest news is out from J.D. Power about the 2023 U.S. Initial Quality Study on car brands. Buick did well, coming in fourth place among the 33 brands studied. The study looked at the number of problems reported by customers early on in their ownership period. Sadly, the study also found that the industry average for problems has increased over the past few years.

The J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Initial Quality Study highlighted car brands. The study examined survey responses from over 93,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2023-model-year vehicles. It included 223 questions and nine categories: seats, exterior, driving assistance, and infotainment. The study found that Buick performed well, coming in fourth place out of 33 brands studied. However, it’s also worth noting that the industry average for problems has increased over the past few years. The study was conducted from February to May of 2023.

According to J.D. Power’s survey responses, they determined the average number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles. This metric is called PP100; a lower score means fewer reported problems.

In the latest 2023 study, Buick ranked near the top in fourth place with a score of 162. According to J.D. The Buick Encore GX received acknowledgment as the best model in the Small SUV segment, with the Kia Soul and Ford Bronco Sport listed as runner-ups.

Additionally, the study indicated that Buick leads the pack among four General Motors brands, with Chevy taking fifth place, GMC taking sixth, and Cadillac coming in eighth. Interestingly, Dodge came out on top with a score of 140 PP100, followed closely by Ram with 141 PP100, and Alfa Romeo rounding out the top three with a score of 143 PP100. The study found that the average score for the entire automotive industry was 192 PP100.

It’s concerning to see the rise in quality problems across the automotive market, with J.D. Power reporting an average increase of 30 PP100 over the past two years. Manufacturers must address these issues and prioritize quality control to ensure the safety and satisfaction of their customers. However, Buick has a leg up over other lackluster automakers.
