IIHS Test is No Match for the 2021 GMC Acadia

The 2021 GMC Acadia performed like a heavyweight champ with something to prove at the recent crash test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For best-possible rating, the Acadia received a ‘Good’ in every crashworthy evaluation. 

The mid-size crossover received the overall rating of ‘Good’ from the Institute for Highway Safety. But, unfortunately, the Acadia did not qualify for Top Safety Pick nor the Top Safety Pick+ award. The honor of Top Safety Pick is bestowed upon vehicles considered the safest on the market by the automaker. But the Top Safety Pick+ was an opportunity missed because of the Acadia’s headlights. The standard LED headlights received ‘Marginal’ as a rating because they lacked visibility on road curves for the high beams and low beam settings. 

An upgraded variation of the LED lights comes standard on the GMC Pro Safety Plus Package for the SLE trim and SLT trim. The upgraded lighting is also provided on the AT4 and Denali trim which also received a rating of ‘Marginal’ from low visibility on road curves. 

Unfortunately, the GMC Acadia needs improvement when it pertains to its headlamps. However, the Institute for Highway Safety managed the best attainable rating ‘Superior’ for Acadia’s Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking and Optional Forward Collision Alert safety systems. A 12 mph and 25 mph test was administered, and the SUV performed as it was supposed to, reducing in speed as needed and protecting passengers from a significant front-end collision.    

The 2022 GMC Acadia will see some much-needed safety improvements. The Pro Safety Plus Package will become standard. The features will also include but not be limited to Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Parking, and Front and Rear Park Assist, to name a few.
