The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is Out of This World
Ever so often, a vehicle emerges that seems to do the impossible. That jaw-dropping shift from fantasy to reality usually delivers a track-oriented sports car. The “sports car” renders a beautiful design and intuitive engineering that typically does not fit the cost-efficient range, but it may be a steal with the perfect group of friends.
With the recipe for the “What the Heck is that?” the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV came along—the fraternal twin to the Hummer EV Pickup offering the same features but with a rear. In addition, an 8.9-inch wheelbase reduction reduces cargo space relative to the pickup but preserves the rear-seat space. Although the SUV’s wheelbase extends to 126.7 inches, it’s still vast and comes within half an inch of the 1973 Lincoln Continental.
The Hummer EV offers a petite battery pack that delivers a combined output of three motors from 1000 horsepower to 830 horses for the pickup. The electric big-boy will also provide a two-motor setup with 625 horsepower. The triple motor powertrain reveals a launch-control mode known as Watts to Freedom or (WTF), and it is a well-deserved name. Lowering the SUV’s body by 3.5 inches preps the battery and blasts the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds. However, if the car accelerates hard with the suspension in an elevated mode, the vehicle dips the rear end and directs the nose upwards.
The off-road is afraid of the readily equipped Hummer’s that feature 35-inch tires on 18-inch wheels. So instead, the on-road variation receives 22-inch wheels and LT305/55R-22 Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires. The rear-suspension articulation keeps the Hummers wheels grounded on those uneven terrains. However, off-road variations eliminate the rear anti-roll bar with the addition of a few underbody cameras.
Inside the GMC EV SUV, the cabin favors what we know and love about its fraternal twin. The interior is vast, and the floor is flat. A 12.3-inch digital gauge display is directly in front of the driver, while a 13.4-inch touchscreen faces the passengers. A smart move from the engineering team, GMC held on to some physical switch gears for climate-control functions. The rear seating is phenomenal, and the cargo space is big enough to accommodate the luggage of five occupants.
The Hummer EV SUV defies all odds, accelerating like a tiny sports car, handling like there’s nothing inside, and being as charming as the stallion it resembles. The monstrous SUV is off-road capable, and there are no concerns about sucking water into the intake. Although the Hummer EV is a heavy vehicle, its features outweigh the pounds.
