General Motors May Have a Small EV Truck in the Works

Are the GMC Hummer and Chevy Silverado too big of an electric truck? General Motors may be considering the perfect solution. The American automaker has had a small electric pickup floating around an organized workshop. Supposedly, the compact EV will make the hybrid Ford Maverick look like a giant with two doors, a low-swinging profile, and a bed that stretches 4ft to 4.5 ft long. The start price for the potential EV would fall below $30,000, and that’s perfect for enthusiasts who can’t attain the Chevrolet Silverado. 

Although GMC’s compact pickup hasn’t been confirmed for production, the Sierra maker hasn’t specified which brand would inherit the pickup. The economic EV design director, Michael Pevovar, stated that the automaker erects concepts like these to “get a reaction” and possibly to improve results or trash them. However, if the prototype is too miniature yet widely received, General Motors may use another platform to grow the pickup. 

Nonetheless, it would work to the benefit of the automotive General to bring the EV to life. The small pickup segment is up and coming. Hence, the Ford Maverick outperformed the Ford Ranger and Ford Expedition during the Summer of 2022. Likewise, the Hyundai Santa Cruz topped the compact Hyundai Accent and mini-SUV, the Hyundai Venue. The future compact pickup EV would allow General Motors to compete in a segment that craves skillful versatility. Most importantly, GM would be the only automaker to offer an all-electric vehicle to the compact arena. 

Producing an affordable electric vehicle takes time, and many car makers haven’t prioritized making them. For example, Chevrolet’s Equinox EV has a starting price of around $30,000. Yet Tesla and other automakers look to producing more economically feasible vehicles in the coming years. Affordable cars would ignite GM’s EV segment and propel the automaker to its electrification goals for 2025.
