Digging Deeper than the Interior with the 2022 GMC Hummer EV
Time flies, and even quicker in a GMC Hummer EV. It’s been a little over a year since the GMC Hummer EV pickup debuted, and the massive truck remains the main topic of many discussions. When General Motors claimed the pickup could travel 350 miles on a single charge of its 200-kWh Ultium battery, many people speculated. However, GM’s rating placed the Hummer EV above the Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA) estimates of the first electric truck, the Rivian R1T. In addition, General Motors recently filed test data with the EPA, where claims solidify into truth. Here’s a look at some fascinating details regarding the Crab Walking electric pickup.
First, the test data document demonstrated that the Edition 1 model harbors an Ultium battery holding a usable capacity of 212.7 kWh. The Hummer EV’s available capacity is significantly immense compared to the Ford F-150 Lightning. The F-150 Lightning contains a 131 kWh Extended Range battery pack, while the Rivian R1T harbors a 129 kWh lithium-ion battery; through the field data, it is easy to see how the Hummer achieves a 329-mile EPA combined range, consuming 47 MPGe of electricity.
The Hummer EV’s range is much better than the Rivian R1T’s 314-mile rating and the Ford’s F-150 Lightning’s mileage of 300-miles. Another interesting fact about the Hummer EV is that the pickup’s front and rear reduction ratios have a 30 percent difference of 13.3:1 in front and 10.5:1 for the back. The reduction ratios shift the primary propulsion source to a particular axle for better efficiency through rough driving conditions.
GMC does not intend on displaying the Hummer EV’s MPGe figures on the window sticker because vehicles holding a gross vehicle weight of 8500 lbs are not required to do so. So here are the pickups MPGe figures: 51 MPGe city, 43 MPGe highway, and 47 MPGe combined.
GMC stated that this test is the final certification for the 2022 Hummer EV. The other Hummer EVs, such as the 3X, 2X, and EV2, will arrive in the next few years. So don’t rush the next few years because time sure does fly.
