Buick Earns Best Car Brand

Once again, Buick rises to the top, only this time, the automaker earned the best for the 2022 JD Power Initial Quality Study. Previously, for the 2021 JD Power Initial Quality Study, General Motors held the 12th seed, but now the automaker has catapulted to first. 

In an annual owner survey, JD Power monitors the number of problems reported in the first 90 days of ownership. The issues reported can range from crucial component failures to user discontent. For instance, some user disappointment stemmed from the design and functionality of infotainment features. Moreover, dissatisfaction with the infotainment system comprised 25% of surveyed complaints. 

Other automakers such as Dodge, Genesis, and KIA took home the other top five spots. The top five automakers demonstrated brilliance during a turbulent time, especially for the automotive industry. For the JD Power Initial Quality Study, average scores usually sit at 162. However, for the 2022 Quality Study, the average score rose to 180. Moreover, JD Power assures the new average score reflects the coronavirus pandemic. 

“Given the many challenges automakers and their dealers had to face in the past year, it’s somewhat surprising that initial quality didn’t fall even more dramatically. In general, initial quality has shown steady improvement throughout the history of this study, so the decline this year is disappointing—yet understandable. Automakers continue to launch vehicles that are more and more technologically complex in an era in which there have been many shortages of critical components to support them.”

Since General Motors took home first place for the JD Power Study, the GMC and Cadillac placed in the top ten brands as well. Additionally, GMC and Cadillac led all automakers with nine segment awards. The Chevrolet Silverado earned recognition for the light-duty and heavy-duty truck categories. Moreover, the Chevrolet Corvette attained the top premium sports car. 

Tesla finally made its way to the JD Power 2022 US Initial Quality Study. The 2022 Study marks the first time Tesla made the JD Power list, and the electric automaker continues to improve for the third consecutive year. For the past two years, Tesla has refused to cooperate with the JD Power survey because the owner’s permission is required in 15 states. As a result of Tesla’s opposition, the automaker is ineligible to win any awards. However, we understand why Tesla is uncooperative. It’s hard to lose to an automaker who cares about drivers; three cheers for Buick, the best car brand for 2022.
